Performance Report
We purchased this vehicle in February 1996, and approximately twelve months later our problems started. We were not informed that at 100,000km we had to replace the timing belt. (We had never owned a diesel before.) At approximateley, 117,000 km the belt went. We heard a strange noise but the van was still in motion. As we stopped at a stop sign, so did the car. On calling the NRMA, he stated the timing belt was the problem and towed us home. Our local garage repaired the belt but a noise had developed in the motor, which he did not know the cause. We then went to a diesel mechanic who stripped the top part of the engine down to find the problem. Fuel injectors were replaced along with glow plugs and of course the head was repaired. Cost- approximately $1,200. Then, nine months later, another noise developed. This time the bottom part of the engine had problems. Considering what we had already spent, the mechanic thought a reconditioned engine was the answer - cost approximately $3,500.
Our mechanic told us that we would use more oil while the engine was settling in, so to monitor the oil level carefull. We also followed the instructions on the MBL8 Concentrate which recommends this be added to a reconditioned engine at 5,000 km.
At 5,000 km we changed the oil and filter and added the MBL8 Concentrate as per instructions. We were still monitoring the oil but not as carefully as before. We were on our way home one Saturday (we had been driving approximately two hours) when we noticed a different sound coming from the engine. We were almost home by this stage. To our surprise, the engine had run out of oil. The dip stick registered nothing.
We feel that the only reason the engine did not seize up on us was due to the MBL8 concentrate that was added at the previous oil change. Only one change had taken place. For the retail cost of only $19, this small outlay saved us another engine at a cost of approximately $3,500
We will never miss using MBL Concentrate in this vehicle or any other vehicle that we may own in the future.
